Dallas Champion Animal Project
The Dallas Companion Animal Project, previously Metroplex Animal Coalition and Dallas Animal Advocates, have been hosting two spay/neuter events at Dallas Animal Services each month. Since August, 2012, over 1,200 dogs and cats have been spayed/neutered! In nine months, if half of these were female – that’s 1,200 litters prevented! Plus the prevention of the litters their offspring would have had!!! That’s an amazing number.
There is more work to do, however, and we need volunteers to accomplish this work. The goal is to continue these two free events – focusing on specific zip codes in Dallas – for at least 2 more years. At each event 65-80 surgeries are scheduled. The veterinarians and technicians handle the preparation and surgeries. Volunteers take care of the following: check-in, post-surgical monitoring, check-out, clean-up and laundry. In fact, sometimes, the folks we help need transport for their animals and we help with that, as well.
For many of the people we help and the animals who they entrust to our care, this can be a very scary day. Many of the dogs and cats have never been away from home, so they are very scared. Many of the people have no experience with surgery on their pet or what to expect. The volunteers are crucial to making this day as pleasant as it can be for both the pets and their human families.
Whether you have 1-8 hours on Sundays twice a month, once a month or several hours during the week to do laundry, we can use your help!
If you are interested, please email spaydallas2@yahoo.com to find out more about what kinds of help are needed.

Area crime update for 3/21/13
The following information is courtesy Joan Quiett of the Lakeridge Estates North Neighborhood Association (bordered by Walnut Hill Ln., Ferndale, McCree, and Audelia):
Last night I requested from Senior Corporal Alena Gallardo -- our Community Police Officer a confirmation of what I thought I heard at the Crime Summit. Did not want to pass on any misleading information. What I understood was that all of the women were young (20's and 30's) and in the first 2 cases, there was no male presence in the house. The third case happened after her husband has left for work. She confirmed only that they were young.
She pointed out that as is often the case in incidents like these, descriptions were changing some as events became clearer.
She added the following advice:
"Just tell people to be very aware of the surroundings, call 911 for anyone looking suspicious in the neighborhood, going door to door. Tell them to secure everything as much as possible, get alarms if possible, don't walk dogs or children without cell phone and if they leave the house, look around the yard, look down the street to see if anyone is watching people. Hope that helps. We are working very hard on trying to catch the suspect or suspects. We have beat officers assigned to beats 247/248 24 hours a day and not leaving the area. Mounted patrol is in the area, as well as bike officers."

December 6, 2012 LHAIA email:
The Lake Highlands Area Improvement Association is sharing this information provided by the City of Dallas as part of the LBJ/Skillman Urban Planning Initiative. Please take a few minutes to look at the information available in the links and provide feedback on the survey.
The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) and the City of Dallas are working jointly on the LBJ/Skillman Urban Planning Initiative, a current community effort to plan for the future of the area near Interstate Highway (IH) 635, LBJ Freeway and Skillman Street in Dallas. As part of the initiative, these two governmental agencies are asking local residents, business owners and others to provide feedback about current conditions in the area, and about the future.
The survey may be found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LBJ_Skillman_Future.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is planning to reconstruct the intersection of Skillman Street and LBJ Freeway/IH 635. This reconstruction is expected to help the flow of vehicular traffic through the area, while offering the potential for changing land uses in the area. The LBJ/Skillman Urban Planning Initiative will help the City of Dallas prepare for the future, including the impact of the TxDOT project, and help identify community-based activities to move forward as area development and redevelopment occur. More information about the initiative is available at http://www.nctcog.org/LBJSkillman.
Additional information will be provided at a workshop scheduled for 6:30PM to 8:00PM on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at Forest Lane Academy, 9663 Forest Lane, Dallas, TX 75243.
Information on the initiative and a link to a community survey can be found in the December 6 LHAIA email below.
Additional information can be found in the recent articles in Lake Highlands Today and the Advocate.
Hope to see your there,
